Tennis team loses in Big East, throws team wins
The Syracuse tennis team may have enjoyed the warm temperatures and sunny skies of Coral Gables, Fla., but it can’t be pleased with a fifth-place finish at the Big East Championship.
SU fell, 4-0, to Boston College on Friday, earning a trip to the losers’ bracket. There, the Orangewomen beat Rutgers, 4-0, to finish fifth in a field of six.
Against Rutgers, SU won two doubles matches to earn one point, and three singles matches worth one each. Shervin Saedinia and Marion Charlier, at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively, won in straight sets.
In Friday’s loss to Boston College, SU won only one doubles match, as Masha Kabanova and Saedinia won, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. BC won three singles matches, two in straight sets.
Track and field
An unseasonably windy day didn’t stop the men’s and women’s throws teams from posting home victories at the Judith and Leslie Vielbig Invitational.
The Orangemen, led by Tim Adrian, Tim Biever and Steve Bedard, recorded 209 points to Canisius’ 144 and Cornell’s 58. They swept the top three spots in the discus with throws from 43 to 52 feet.
For the Orangewomen, freshmen Nicole Kendrick and Johvonne Hernandez helped SU to a 188-137 victory over Canisius. Kendrick won the discus for the fourth straight meet. Hernandez took second in that event. The classmates flip-flopped positions in the shot put, with Hernandez winning and Kendrick finishing second.
Syracuse travels to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Wednesday for its final meet before the Big East Outdoor Championship in Storrs, Conn., on May 3-5.
