Staff Report : Parker inducted into Hall of Fame
Syracuse head field hockey coach Kathleen Parker was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Friday.
Parker is in her 29th season as head coach at SU and ranks sixth all-time among active Division I coaches in career wins. Parker is 316-214-14 at Syracuse with 21 winning seasons.
Induction ceremonies will take place Jan. 6, 2007 in Baltimore, Md.
On the field, Parker’s Orange clinched its third consecutive winning season with a 3-2 victory at Dartmouth on Sunday.
Senior back Jess Wreski scored two goals for SU (10-9), including the penalty-shot winner three minutes into overtime.
Alison Babbit added her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Cross Country
The Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country teams placed fifth and seventh, respectively, at the Big East championships in Boston on Friday.
Sophomore Nana Sang-Bender earned All-Big East honors, becoming just the third woman in school history to do so. Sang-Bender placed ninth out of 131 runners. Junior Liz Cufari, who was all-conference last season, finished second on SU and 33rd overall.
Jeff Scull, a sophomore transfer, missed All-Big East honors on the men’s side by one second. He finished 16th overall.
It is just the second time in 21 years the men’s team has placed fifth.
Volleyball
Syracuse swept Rutgers Sunday, one day after losing a crucial match to Villanova.
The 3-1 loss on Saturday put the Orange two games back of the final spot in the Big East tournament.
But after the Wildcats lost on Sunday, SU (11-20, 5-6 Big East) moved back to one game behind Villanova for the final spot in the Big East tournament with the three-game win over the Scarlet Knights. Syracuse held Rutgers to just 52 points over the three games.
Junior Joscie Kaup set the school season record for digs on Saturday with 26.
Swimming and Diving
Both of the SU swimming and diving teams dropped their first Big East meets of the season at Pittsburgh on Saturday.
The men fell to 1-1 overall after a 150-91 defeat and the women lost their second meet in a row, 156-86.
Graduate transfer Anna DiPlacido continued her undefeated run in the women’s diving events. She won both the one-meter and three-meter events for the third meet in a row.
For the men, freshman Alex Taraskin won the 500- and 1000-meter free stroke race. He qualified for the Big East with his 500 free time.
