Syracuse University alumnus Mike Tirico, a play-by-play commentator on ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast, will speak today in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse III. The event will take place at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
‘It’s a thrill that an alum of that magnitude is coming to talk to students,’ said Andrew Africk, a junior broadcast journalism major. ‘We always hear about those with huge egos, and obviously he is not one of them because he is willing to come back to discuss to Syracuse and his success.’
Before joining ESPN in 1991, Tirico was the sports director at CBS affiliate WTVH-TV in Syracuse, and was the play-by-play voice during a number of SU athletic events. He also hosted a show on WAER, SU’s radio station. Tirico has covered various sporting events, including NBA games, the U.S. Open and the Super Bowl. Tirico was the host of ABC’s golf coverage from 1996 to 2007.
In 1987, Tirico was the first recipient of the Bob Costas Scholarship, given to outstanding journalism students. He also received an Associated Press New York Broadcasters award for a documentary about the SU football team and its preparation before a game titled ’48 Hours with Syracuse University Football.’ He is also the host of ‘The Mike Tirico Show’ on ESPN, which began in 2007.
