SA programs on track nationally
The Syracuse University Student Association ranks high among other student governments from across the country, said assembly representative Angelo Coker at Monday’s meeting.
Coker and SA Chief of Staff Neal Casey attended the American Student Government Association conference last month and came back with positive feedback about SU student government.
Ninety percent of all the policies discussed at last month’s conference have already been implemented at SU, Coker said. These include programs like Healthy Monday and free bus rides home during the holidays. ‘We are more advanced than most,’ Coker said.
ASGA is a professional organization that supports student governments on college campuses across the country. Conferences hosted by ASGA are held throughout the year to bring representatives from different student governments together to discuss initiatives, programs and policies.
Coker hopes SA can improve representation of non-traditional students – which include disabled students, transfer students, night students and University College students – and ensure that they have a voice in university affairs. He wants to add a non-traditional student liaison to SA to represent them.
‘We have a lot of non-traditional students on campus and I’m not sure how many are represented,’ he said.
The possibility of administering a survey about campus safety to students was also discussed at Monday’s meeting in response to recent crime on campus.
SA is hoping to send a survey through e-mail to a random sample of the student body, gathering opinions on what the university can do to make students feel safe at all times, said SA President Larry Seivert.
The Committee on Student Engagement reported that more than 60 streetlights on and around campus have been replaced in the past week.
Jon Barnhart, chair of the committee on student engagement, announced that assembly representative David Woody will be stepping up as assistant chair. Woody will handle the outreach side of student engagement while Barnhart focuses on his campaign for SA president.
