Student Association spent four hours electing its 10 new cabinet members and representatives at its first meeting Tuesday night.

Student Association President Jon Barnhart’s nominations for cabinet members were all approved by the assembly.

Angelo Coker, a junior hospitality major, was elected vice president unanimously. Coker’s initiative is to bridge the gap between the Syracuse community and the university in terms of engagement, safety and non-traditional students, he said.

Hillary Maxwell, a junior information technology and management major, was elected chief of staff. Upon her election, she stressed the importance of communication between members of SA.

‘Hillary really stood out as that one to make sure the communication was always there, no matter how it needed to be communicated,’ Barnhart said in a previous interview with The Daily Orange.

Neal Casey, a sophomore in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the former chief of staff, was nominated chair of the Student Life Committee.

Assembly members questioned Barnhart about why he did not nominate Casey for a higher position. Barnhart said Casey chose to run for the committee chair himself.

‘He feels he can do the most through this position,’ Maxwell said.

Adam Britton, a junior in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, was nominated for co-director of public relations.

Britton was unable to attend the meeting because of a Tuesday evening class, so his election was postponed to the first Monday meeting.

Dan Scorpio, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, was elected as the other co-director of public relations. He said his goal is to use Facebook as a link between students and SA. He also wants to make sure on-campus media outlets know everything SA does in order to keep students informed.

David Woody, a sophomore in the L. C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, was elected chair of the Student Engagement Committee. Woody said his goal is to communicate more thoroughly with students and organizations on campus in order to gather student opinion. The committee would then use the viewpoints of students to generate new campus initiatives, he said in a previous interview with The D.O.

Andy Swab, a sophomore international relations and magazine journalism major, was elected chair of the Academic Affairs Committee.
