SU women’s basketball coach ‘perfectly fine’ after collapsing during game
Syracuse women’s basketball head coach Quentin Hillsman saw a physician after collapsing in the second half of Saturday’s game against Louisville.
With 5:30 remaining, Hillsman collapsed next to the SU bench. The fourth-year head coach was subsequently taken to the locker room, where he was examined by Louisville team physicians. Hillsman was ultimately fine, attributing the collapse to dizziness. Assistant coach Rick Moody coached the Orange for the remainder of the game.
‘Coach Hillsman collapsed on the sideline with 5:30 remaining,’ a spokesman from SU Athletics said when reached by phone Saturday night. ‘Assistant coach Rick Moody coached the rest of the game. Coach Hillsman was escorted to the locker room where he was seen by the team (Louisville) physician. He is perfectly fine, and he traveled home with the team.’
In an interview with The Associated Press, Hillsman, 39, attributed the fall to a slight ‘blackout,’ which he experienced for a ‘second’.
‘I just felt a little woozy and then I went down,’ Hillsman said in an interview with The Post-Standard. ‘That’s the first time in my life that I’ve ever passed out. I never lost consciousness. I knew what was going on all the time, but it was crazy when you look up and see 20 people standing around you.’
In the same interview with The Post-Standard, Hillsman stated that he planned on being examined again on Monday when back in Syracuse to make sure that everything is ‘OK.’
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Orange and capped off a three-game road swing for SU. SU’s three conference victories come after a program record 13-0 out of conference record.
The Orange (16-3) returns home Wednesday for a matchup with St. John’s.
