DPS investigates string of larcenies after stolen computer reported in Eggers
The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety is investigating a larceny in Eggers Hall—the latest in what DPS is calling a string of campus larcenies.
A teaching assistant left his MacBook, valued at $1,400, unattended in a basement ‘grad lab’ study area in Eggers and returned about 10 minutes later to find it gone at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, DPS Captain John Sardino said. DPS could not release the TA’s name at this time.
There is no suspect identified as of yet, Sardino said. Larcenies in Bird Library and Huntington Hall are currently being investigated. A suspicious person was seen at the scene of one larceny, but Sardino would not say which.
The Syracuse Police Department has been notified and is actively involved in the Eggers case, Sardino said.
Since Jan. 1, DPS has reported 25 larcenies in the university area, according to DPS crime logs. Sixteen of the 25 have occurred in buildings on University Place, Crouse Drive, College Place, University Avenue, Waverly Avenue, Marshall Street, Sims Drive or Stadium Place. Ten cases remain open.
It is not known if the Eggers larceny is connected to several other recent campus larcenies, but ‘it fits some of the other criteria of the other larcenies,’ Sardino said.
There have been a couple different strings of larcenies over the years on campus and DPS is hoping to prevent a continuation of the latest string, Sardino said. DPS will be increasing patrols and encourages members of the SU community not to leave belongings unattended, which has been a ‘common denominator’ in the latest string, Sardino said.
