Small fire breaks out in South Campus apartment

UPDATED: March 30, 2011, 1:34 a.m.

The Syracuse Fire Department and the Department of Public Safety responded to a fire on Farm Acre Road just after 2 a.m. Tuesday.

An overheated television set was the cause of a fire that occurred in a Farm Acre Road two-bedroom apartment at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to a Department of Public Safety report. The TV was an older model, and the fire was classified as an electrical fire, said Jenn Horvath, public information officer for DPS.

Ross Terrance, a senior psychology major, said he was asleep in his two-person apartment at 181 Farm Are Road when he heard the fire alarm go off. He fled his apartment and called the Department of Public Safety, which he said responded to the call within 10 to 15 minutes.

The fire began in his roommate’s bedroom, Terrance said. His roommate was not home at the time. Immediately following the fire, Terrance said he thought the cause of the fire was his roommate’s computer power cord causing nearby papers to catch on fire. It appears damage to the apartment is minimal, as the fire was put out with fire extinguishers, Terrance said.

A DPS corporal on the scene Tuesday morning said there were no injuries. DPS confirmed the fire was isolated to the one apartment.

DPS vehicles blocked off Farm Acre Road at both ends. At least three trucks from the Syracuse Fire Departments were on the scene. The last fire truck left the area just after 3 a.m., but several officers remained on the scene. An hour after the fire was reported, the smell of smoke was still present outside the apartment complexes.
