Syracuse sophomore center Fab Melo made his first appearance in Syracuse City Court’s domestic violence court Wednesday after receiving a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge in May.

Melo and his defense lawyer Gary Sommer met with Assistant District Attorney Melinda McGunnigle and City Judge Stephen Dougherty in court this afternoon, according to a June 29 article in The Post-Standard. Melo is facing a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief after he was accused of breaking the turn signal on his then girlfriend’s car during an argument on May 30.

Sommer informed Dougherty that Melo was in counseling, and McGunnigle asked the judge to remind Melo there was an order of protection directing him to have no contact with the victim.

Dougherty also advised Melo to continue his counseling, according to the article. The brief meeting ended when Dougherty adjourned the case to Aug. 31.

Melo was scheduled to appear in court twice earlier this month, but each of the previous appearances were postponed.
