The Syracuse football team will enter its 2011 season with two fewer freshmen than anticipated. Quarterback Ashton Broyld and running back Tyree Smallwood will not be a part of the Orange this season, SU head coach Doug Marrone said in a statement through SU Athletic Communications Tuesday.

SU Athletics would not comment on whether Broyld and Smallwood are expected to join the SU program next year, stating that they both ‘have some work to do.’

Neither Broyld nor Smallwood are listed in the Syracuse University Directory System. The other 19 freshmen joining the Orange this fall are in the directory, as they began SU’s ‘Summer Start’ program on Tuesday.

Broyld, a quarterback from Rush-Henrietta High School in Rochester, N.Y., has been in the news the past few months for his legal troubles. Broyld pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct violation last Thursday that stemmed from an incident of public lewdness during a playoff basketball game in March.

Broyld’s legal issues were not a part of the reason for his absence from the Orange this fall, according to SU athletics.

Broyld planned to move to SU this past weekend to start summer classes and conditioning, according to an article in The Post-Standard on Thursday. Phone calls and messages left for Broyld, Rush-Henrietta football coach Joe Montesano and Rush-Henrietta Athletic Director Tom Stewart were not returned at this time.

Smallwood, a running back from Cornwall Central High School in New Windsor, N.Y., said in a phone interview Tuesday he is expecting a call from Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone this week. Smallwood said he had not heard from Marrone as of Tuesday morning, but had talked to Syracuse wide receivers coach Rob Moore last week.

Smallwood said there was one class, a creative writing course, he wanted to take during the summer before coming to Syracuse in August. Instead, he may attend Milford Academy in New Berlin, N.Y., this fall before enrolling at Syracuse in the spring.

Smallwood said he still plans on ending up at Syracuse.

‘I want to go to summer school and just to go up in August,’ he said. ‘But if not I have to go to Milford for a couple of months and then go to Syracuse.’

Milford Academy has been a stepping stone for Syracuse players in the past. Two freshmen who joined the Orange last spring, linebacker Dyshawn Davis and wide receiver Jeremiah Kobena, were originally part of SU’s recruiting class of 2010 before spending last fall at Milford. Orange defensive end Mikhail Marinovich also attended Milford before coming to SU.

Smallwood said that he would take the creative writing course and play football at Milford if he isn’t a part of Syracuse in 2011. Phone calls to Milford Academy head coach Bill Chaplick were not returned.

Broyld was named the New York State Class AA player of the year in 2010 after leading Rush-Henrietta to a state championship and an undefeated season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback led the Royal Comets to the state championship victory in the Carrier Dome, rushing for two touchdowns, passing for a third, and coming up with a key sack on defense in a 40-28 win over Troy High School.

Smallwood ran for 962 yards and 10 touchdowns in his senior season at Cornwall Central. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound back had a sensational junior year in which he ran for over 1,500 yards, leading to offers from BCS programs Maryland, Rutgers and Cincinnati, in addition to Syracuse.
