Punk rock group Bayside brings emotional act to intimate setting at the Lost Horizon
Have you ever had your heart broken? The lead singer of Bayside, Anthony Raneri, certainly has, and he’s not afraid to sing about it.
The emo-punk rockers will take the stage at Syracuse’s Lost Horizon alongside openers Transit, State Champs, and Of Fortune and Fame. Doors open at 6 p.m. and Of Fortune and Fame will be taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased at Syracuseshows.com. The Syracuse show is one of a few smaller club shows for Bayside as they gear up for a much larger U.S. co-headlining tour in October with Saves the Day.
Bayside, who formed in 2000, released their fifth studio album, ‘Killing Time,’ in February. The album garnered critical acclaim and debuted at No. 35 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts, their highest charting debut, according to a 2011 press release. British producer Gil Norton, who has previously worked with Jimmy Eat World and Foo Fighters, produced the album. It features singles ‘Sick, Sick, Sick’ and ‘Already Gone.’ The band members are known for their high energy live performances. Since debut album ‘Siren and Condolences’ in 2004, Bayside has risen the ranks in the alternative and punk world, touring with bands such as Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein and Anberlin.
Boston indie rockers Transit, who will also be accompanying Saves the Day and Bayside on the U.S. tour, are set to release their fourth studio album, ‘Listen and Forgive,’ on Oct. 4. They mix big pop-punk choruses over acoustic guitar. Their newest single, ‘All Your Heart,’ features former Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump.
Senior television, radio and film major Evan Lavoie is excited about seeing one of his favorite bands in such an intimate setting.
‘Bayside came to the Westcott Theater a few years ago, and I wasn’t able to go,’ he said. ‘I’m glad I’ll finally be able to catch them at the Lost Horizon in a much smaller venue.’ The Lost Horizon, located off Erie Boulevard on Thompson Road, is approaching its 40th anniversary as a live music venue. In the past, the venue has played host to such bands as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses and Soundgarden. The 400-person capacity will allow Bayside’s complex chord progressions and guitar solos to ring out over a crowd of die-hard fans, according to the band’s website.
While Bayside’s emotional-filled lyrics about heartbreak and pain led to a cult following, the rockers experienced a tragedy shortly after the release of their self-titled album in 2005. On Oct. 31, 2005, the band’s tour van hit a patch of ice in Wyoming and skidded off the road, killing drummer John ‘Beatz’ Holohan. After announcing Chris Guglielmo as the new drummer, Bayside released the stellar ‘The Walking Wounded,’ which featured hit single ‘Duality.’ The album was dedicated to the fallen band member.
With a lengthy discography and a dozen new songs, Bayside should have no problem entertaining Syracuse fans Tuesday.
‘In a semester already filled with DJs and electro music, it’s nice to switch it up and have a punk band with the caliber of Bayside to be playing a show here,’ Lavoie said. ‘I’m really looking forward to seeing them tear it up.’
