STAFF : Syracuse track opens outdoor season with 4 strong meets
The Syracuse track and field team started its outdoor season Saturday at four different meets across the country. The squad was split and competed at the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn University, the Cornell Spring Invitational in Ithaca, the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
Sprinters and jumpers competed in Auburn. On the men’s side, Jarret Eaton took second place in the 110-meter hurdles. Teammates Amadou Gueye and Matthew Callanan finished eighth and 10th in the event, respectively. Frank Taylor finished 14th in the long jump, followed by teammate Will Watson, who tied for 15th. In the women’s competition, Flings Owusu-Agyapong and SaDe Lewis finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Ieva Staponkute placed sixth in the triple jump.
At the Stanford Invitational, Pat Dupont finished fifth in his section of the 10,000-meter run. For the women, Molly Malone placed ninth in her section of the 1,500-meter run, and Heather Stephens finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
At the Sam Howell Invitational, Kimberly Spano and Robert Molke finished second and third in their sections of the 10,000-meter run. In the 5,000-meter elite competition, Joseph Kush finished seventh in his heat, and Brenna Symoniak finished fifth in the women’s meet.
The Orange returns to action this Saturday at the UNC Kent Taylor/Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
