STAFF : Eaton, Syracuse wrap up competition at national championship

Five SU athletes competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, which began Wednesday and concluded Saturday.

Syracuse’s Jarret Eaton finished sixth overall in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.83 seconds. The redshirt senior qualified for the 110m finals with a time of 13.55 seconds in his semifinal heat, but failed to hold his pace in the finals.

His season is far from over.

Eaton will compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon from June 22-July 1 on the basis of his 13.44 second finish in the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Wednesday. If he finishes in the top three in Eugene, Eaton will travel to London with the U.S. Olympic team.

Tito Medrano and Sarah Pagano both competed in the national finals of the 10,000m run. Medrano, a senior who finished 12th in the race last season, ran well enough for 19th place with a time of 30:23.59. Pagano ran to a 22nd place finish in the women’s race.

Senior Lauren Penney finished 22nd in the women’s 5,000m run with a time of 17:39.83.

Senior Katie Hursey ran a time of 10:36.27 in the semifinals of the women’s 3000m steeplechase. She finished 11th in her heat but failed to qualify for the finals.

Florida topped the men’s competition, narrowly beating LSU on the strength of a victory in the meet’s final event. LSU ran away with the women’s championship.
