Syracuse posts 5th consecutive shutout with win over Providence, continues undefeated season
No. 1 Syracuse continued its unbeaten season with a 3-0 win at Providence (5-6, 1-1 Big East) on Saturday. Three different players scored for the Orange (12-0, 4-0) in its fifth consecutive shutout and eighth of the year.
Junior Leonie Geyer scored the first goal off a penalty corner just less than 10 minutes into the game. Kelsey Millman and Jordan Page recorded an assist on the goal, Geyer’s seventh of the season.
Millman extended the lead to two goals with just less than five minutes left in the first half with a goal from the right post assisted by Page. Millman is now tied with forward Lauren Brooks for the team lead in goals with eight.
Sophomore Stephanie Hussey knocked in a loose ball for an insurance goal with fewer than three minutes remaining in the game.
Syracuse goaltender Leann Stiver made six saves and now has 20 career shutouts.
The senior leads the nation in goals against average (0.44) and save percentage (.875). She has played 381 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, dating back to the Orange’s win over Kent State on Sept. 16.
Syracuse’s five straight shutouts are tied for the program’s second longest. The team shut out six consecutive opponents to start the 1997 season.
