Appethaizing, Funk ‘n Waffles experience flooding; Funk ‘n Waffles to reopen Saturday

UPDATED: May 31, 2013 at 5:35 p.m.

Funk ‘n Waffles flooded Wednesday night after a storm, causing it to close for two days.

Funk ‘n Waffles sustained damage with two inches of water, flooding the carpeted restaurant, The Post Standard reported on Thursday. Appethaizing was also flooded, but was able to resume normal hours on Thursday.

Both restaurants are located underground, but Funk ‘n Waffles experienced more damage.

Funk ‘n Waffles remained closed on Thursday and Friday, canceling its open mic event Thursday night. The restaurant remained closed on Friday since the carpeting was not yet dried out, but will reopen on Saturday at 9 a.m., according to a post on its Facebook page.

“Not quite dry enough yet. We will be closed all day today. But will be open again tomorrow in the late morning,” according to its Facebook page.

Funk ‘n Waffles owner Adam Gold could not immediately be reached for comment.

Appethaizing was “fully flooded,” with a half inch of water covering the floor, said Julia Byron, the manager on duty at the time of the flood.
She said the flooding started around 5:30 p.m. There was only one table of customers at the time, but they soon left, she said.

Byron said the water quickly poured in through the ceiling at the entrance to the restaurant. It took “only five or ten minutes” to cover the entire restaurant floor, she said.

Cleanup took only a few hours, she said. About five staff members stayed to vacuum the rainwater, as a dehumidifier cycled out the damp air, she said. The restaurant resumed its normal hours on Thursday.

Appethaizing experienced similar flooding a few years ago, Byron said. At the time, the restaurant had carpeting, so the flooding forced Appethaizing to close for a few weeks, she said. The restaurant has since replaced its carpeting with tile.

“I think they were partially prepared from the last time,” Byron said of the restaurant staff.
