New York state seizes Syra-Juice for not paying almost $3,000 in taxes

Syra-Juice Juice Bar & Eatery in Marshall Square Mall has been seized by New York state for not paying almost $3,000 in sales tax.

An orange sign and letter on the door of Syra-Juice said the state Department of Taxation and Finance repossessed the store on Wednesday. Cary Ziter, a spokesman for the department, said a warrant was executed for $2,761 in unpaid sales tax.

Leah Davis, who’s listed as the owner of Syra-Juice, on Thursday didn’t immediately return an email. Calls to the store went to a voicemail box, which was full.

Daniel Lyons, broker for Marshall Square Mall, wouldn’t confirm if Syra-Juice had been seized when reached on his cellphone.

Douglas Freeman, director of purchasing and real estate at SU, couldn’t be reached by phone and email.

Ziter said seizure shouldn’t be a surprise, because the department’s general practice is to communicate often with an individual taxpayer. Seizure isn’t permanent, either, he said.

A taxpayer can either pay the full amount of the debt owed or work out a payment plan with the state to get the business back, he said.
