Incoming freshman Evans to wear No. 22
When JoJo Marasco graduated, speculation mounted about whether any member of the Orange would wear No. 22 – Syracuse lacrosse’s most revered number – in 2014.
It could have been a current star. Or highly touted transfer Randy Staats. Or it could have been no one at all. But Inside Lacrosse reports that Jordan Evans, an incoming freshman from Jamesville-Dewitt High School, will be the next Syracuse player to sport the number. Evans is ranked No. 1 in Inside Lacrosse’s annual Power 100 freshman list.
Evans scored 396 career points, including 205 goals, and was named Nike/U.S. Lacrosse’s Northeast Player of the Year. He stands at 5 feet, 10 inches and 165 pounds, and has drawn comparisons to Mike Powell, who also wore No. 22 for the Orange.
Marasco, the three Powells — Mike, Casey and Ryan — and Gary Gait are some of the Syracuse stars that have donned the number.
After reaching the NCAA championship game in 2013, the Orange lost Marasco, Brian Megill and Luke Cometti, among others, and will rely on Evans to score and distribute.
“Of all the kids we saw,” Syracuse head coach John Desko told Inside Lacrosse, “we thought he had the ability to wear that number.”
