Syracuse finishes season at .500 after beating Notre Dame

Syracuse (16-16, 11-9 Atlantic Coast) ended the season with a big win Saturday afternoon when it knocked off Notre Dame (13-18, 7-13).

The Orange won the game in four sets to finish out the season at .500, six games improved from last season. Syracuse split the first two sets, winning the first 25-16 and losing the second 26-24.

The Orange bounced back in the final two sets taking them 25-17 and 25-20, respectively. Outside hitter Silvi Uattara notched a double-double for the third time in the last four games, racking up 16 kills and 13 digs. Hitter Nicolette Serratore tallied 15 kills and nine digs.

Blocker Monika Salkute had a career performance, notching her personal-best 12 kills and eight total blocks. Fellow blocker and captain Lindsay McCabe had her second double-digit block game of the year, racking up 10 in the victory.

Freshman star Erica Handley dished out 46 assists, averaging more than 10 per set. She also reached a career high in block assists, tallying six. Playing good defense is something that she has strived for all season, and she was able to do so on Saturday.

This win gives Syracuse the boost that it should need heading into next season. With one season of ACC play under its belt, it showed steady improvement all year and garnered more respect going into the 2014 season.
