Orange shuts out Colgate to move two games over .500

Going into its Tuesday night matchup, Syracuse (11-9-2, 3-4-2 College Hockey America) had failed to post a shutout through its first 21 games this season.

But after rattling off two goals in two minutes in the second period, the Orange beat Colgate (5-15-2, 2-8-0 Eastern Conference Athletic Hockey) 2-0 to capture the elusive scoreless win.

SU went into its game against Colgate as the 28th best power play team in the country. With 8:52 left in the second period, sophomore forward Melissa Piacentini put in her seventh goal of the season with only three Colgate defensemen on the ice, extending her point streak to three games.

Exactly two minutes later, freshman forward Eleanor Haines netted the first goal of her collegiate career, giving the Orange a 2-0 lead that it wouldn’t give up.

SU goalie Jenesica Drinkwater collected 24 saves in the shutout. Drinkwater particularly stepped up in the third period, collecting 13 saves in the 20-minute period.

With just minutes remaining, Raiders coach Greg Fargo pulled goalie Ashlynne Rando for the last 3:13 of the game. SU slapped two shots wide before the final buzzer sounded.

The Orange returns home on Friday to play the Rochester Institute of Technology for the first of six straight games at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
