University Place to close Monday night due to sorority Bid Day

UPDATED: January 27, 6:05 p.m.

University Place will close from 5:30-8 p.m. on Monday because of sorority recruitment at the Schine Student Center.

Central New York Regional Transportation Authority bus routes that stop at University Place will operate on Waverly Avenue during the closure. The Destiny USA, Nob Hill, Drumlins and Euclid-Westcott routes will be diverted, according to a Jan. 24 Syracuse University News release.

Permit holders attempting to use university parking lots Q1 and Q2 will have to access them from Crouse Drive and College Place, respectively. Syracuse University Parking and Transit Services staff will detour traffic on University Place from Crouse Avenue to College Place, Scot Vanderpool, manager of Parking and Transit Services, said.

SU’s sororities will offer bids to female students in Schine on Monday night as part of spring recruitment. The event, which usually takes place on a weekend, created more safety concerns this year because a number of students will leave Schine during rush hour traffic, Vanderpool said.

SU’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs requested the road closure, Vanderpool said. Sarah Luposello, vice president of membership recruitment on SU’s Panhellenic Council, said she did not know anything about the road closure.

Erin Kane, associate vice president of public relations at the Office of News Services, said she knew nothing about the decision to close the road beyond the information included in the release.
