It’s becoming “increasingly” more likely that Syracuse keeps center DaJuan Coleman on the shelf and he takes a medical redshirt, SU head coach Jim Boeheim said after his team’s 78-43 win over Colgate on Monday.

Coleman, a junior, is recovering from a procedure designed to regrow cartilage in his knee that was done in January.

“He’s working a little bit more, but we’ll probably decide in about the next couple of weeks what’s going to happen one way or the other,” Boeheim said. “If he doesn’t look like he’s ready to go, then we’ll redshirt him this year. That’s what it looks like, but we’ll give him a little bit more opportunity to see.

“That’s increasingly what it looks like unless he can put together five or six good days and felt really good. He hasn’t been able to do that.”

The Orange (7-4) hasn’t been short of inside scoring this season, leaning on senior Rakeem Christmas for 16.5 points per game and freshman forward Chris McCullough for double-digit points in all of SU’s games but the last three.

But due to foul trouble, they’ve had issues staying on the floor, with all three of its forwards fouling out in a loss to No. 7 Villanova on Saturday. By Boeheim’s assessment of Coleman’s status, it appears Christmas and McCullough won’t have any more reinforcement behind them this season than sophomore backup center Chinonso Obokoh.

Said Boeheim of Coleman: “We’ll have to see. We’ll give him a few more days.”
