John Desko: Hayes McGinley needs to go through ‘university process’ before decision on future

Syracuse head coach John Desko said Hayes McGinley needs to go through “university process” before the team can decide on his future with Syracuse lacrosse.

“Hayes has been through quite a bit, done a lot on his own to make sure he’s learned a lot from the situation,” Desko said on Tuesday afternoon. “And I think he has, I think he’s learned quite a bit, and he’s got to go through a little bit more of a process before we can say anything else.”

The redshirt freshman midfielder has been indefinitely suspended since March 15 for an unspecified violation of team rules, stemming from an arrest for punching two people in the face. On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree harassment and was placed on one-year conditional discharge. He also has an order of protection from the two victims.

McGinley apologized in a printed-out statement that his lawyer issued to media after his court hearing. He assured he is working to correct his “alcohol situation” and promised a similar incident wouldn’t happen again.

Desko echoed the fact that McGinley has worked hard to correct his behavior.

McGinley had played in four games this season and recorded three shots.
