NCAA implements new 30-second shot clock for men’s basketball
The NCAA announced that it will officially reduce the shot clock in men’s basketball from 35 to 30 seconds after the the rules committee proposed the change on May 15. It marks the first shot clock change in 21 years.
In addition to reduced shot clock, there will be an expansion of the restricted area arc under the basket from three to four feet. There will also be a reduced number of timeouts to improve the pace of play.
The NCAA experimented with the reduced shot clock and expanded restricted area arc during the 2015 postseason National Invitation Tournament.
Rules committee president Rick Byrd said that 60 percent of the coaches surveyed wanted the reduced shot clock — a change SU head coach Jim Boeheim has advocated for — and was a factor in the committees recommendation.
In addition, the NCAA announced on Monday that the women’s basketball game will be switching from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters.
