Athletic Department Shakeup

Mark Wheeler named new director of athletic compliance

Mark Wheeler has been named the new director of athletic compliance, according to an SU Today email sent out Monday morning. He will replace Erlease Wagner, who intended to step down from the position this fall, Syracuse.com reported in August.

Wheeler comes to SU after serving two years as the director of compliance at Boise State, the same school Director of Athletics Mark Coyle came to SU from.

“Syracuse University is among the premier athletics programs in the country, and it is an honor to be selected to play a role in its future,” Wheeler said in a release. “When I think about Syracuse, I think of academic excellence, elite student-athletes, and renowned coaches and coaching staffs. I am eager to partner with all of Athletics’ constituencies in the weeks and months ahead to continue enhancing the University’s reputation as a leader in developing high-caliber student-athletes.”

Wheeler’s job description, according to cuse.com, includes managing all aspects of SU’s compliance program, educating a wide variety of people about the rules of the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference, College Hockey America and Intercollegiate Rowing Associations and monitoring recruiting, eligibility, financial aid and certification processes.

Before working at Boise St., Wheeler served as an assistant director of compliance at Ohio State for one year, athletic compliance coordinator at Pepperdine for a year and completed his undergraduate degree in management at Brigham Young in 2009.

Wagner left SU earlier this month, per the release, and Wheeler assumed his new role on Thursday.

Wagner had served as the director of compliance since August 2006 and was involved in the changing of former SU center Fab Melo’s grade in 2012, a meeting mentioned in the NCAA’s 94-page report.
