SA initiative aims to give students internship stipends
A Student Association initiative that would award students with unpaid internships a stipend for the summer is currently pending Syracuse University administration approval, SA Vice President Jane Hong said on Monday.
Hong worked with Sonia Suchak, SA’s academic affairs chair, to create the initiative. If the administration were to approve the proposal, Hong said she hopes it would go into effect next summer.
The initiative would potentially fund 10 students with unpaid internships and help them pay for housing and other living expenses. Hong noted that most students with unpaid internships receive experience credit for them, which requires the students to pay the full price of at least one academic credit to complete their internship. Hong said that makes it even more important for students to be eligible for a stipend.
