Syracuse falls 1-0 to Pittsburgh after conceding penalty kick in OT
Syracuse (4-10-1, 0-6 Atlantic Coast) suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Pittsburgh (10-3-1, 4-2) at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the game’s 99th minute, SU’s Jackie Firenze was whistled for a foul in her own penalty box and received a yellow card. On the ensuing penalty kick, Pittsburgh’s Hanna Hannesdottir found the back of the net — enough for the Panthers to hand the Orange its sixth consecutive loss.
Syracuse managed only two shots on goal throughout the game, coming off the feet of Eva Gordon and Alex Lamontagne. On the other side, Pittsburgh got seven shots on goal, the first six of which SU goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was able to save.
But in the game’s final moment, Brosnan couldn’t save the penalty kick. It was the second time this season Syracuse lost a 1-0 game in overtime after giving up a penalty kick. It also happened at Buffalo on Sept. 26.
The Orange will return to SU Soccer Stadium for its next game, when it hosts North Carolina State on Oct. 18.
