Syracuse police searches for possible shooters near campus

Multiple sources confirmed there was a homicide Wednesday night near Hope Avenue, and Syracuse police confirmed there is at least one armed person near campus.
At about 9 p.m., a Syracuse police officer said it is believed at least one person is armed near Oakwood Cemetery, though the officers on the scene are unsure how many people total are in the area. A helicopter has been hovering overhead, and campus has been put on lockdown.
Here’s what we know so far about the incident. This a chronological list of events with the most recent information at the bottom.
- The campus lockdown was lifted after nearly three hours
- A helicopter was seen hovering above the cemetery around 8 p.m. and dozens of police officers were stationed along Comstock Avenue.
- An Orange Alert was sent to Syracuse University and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students around 8:30 p.m. via text message. Students also received the alert by telephone.
- The alert reads: “SPD investigating crime off campus, shelter in place. Remain in doors, don’t let anyone in, stay out of Oakwood Cemetery, report suspicious activity.”
- SUNY-ESF’s Centennial Hall was on lockdown.
- Students in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications were moved to classes toward the inside of the building following the Orange Alert.
- Students in Flint Hall were told to turn their lights off.
- Students in Bird Library were asked not to leave the building until further notice.
- Members of Otto’s Army that were attending a meeting for the organization were told to remain in Maxwell Hall.
- Reporters on the scene were moved to a press staging area around 9:30 p.m.
- As of 10:10 p.m., Centro buses were still running, including ones to South Campus.
- Police are still in active pursuit and the suspect is still at large
- Detectives left the scene at Hope Avenue a little before 10:30 p.m.
