Beat writers predict Syracuse to clobber Colgate

Syracuse entered the Associated Press poll at No. 14 two Mondays ago, but immediately fell out after losing to Wisconsin and Georgetown last week.

Syracuse (6-2) hosts Colgate (2-5) at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, in what will be Mike Hopkins second game as the Orange’s head coach.

Here are how The Daily Orange’s beat writers think the game will play out.

Pasted

Colgate doesn’t have an experienced center, a necessity for an inferior team to even hang in there against Syracuse. The Orange gets back on track and gets its interim a head coach a win. The not-so-competitive central New York rivalry adds another not-so-interesting chapter as the Orange makes a mockery of the Raiders by the second television timeout.

So fresh, so clean

The Raiders really aren’t a good basketball team, which is why this game can be boiled into a simple formula. The Orange will either make its 3s or have its way inside. Colgate has one player who scores in double-figures, Austin Tillotson, and Syracuse won’t have a problem keeping him in check. In the end, the most frequent opponent in SU’s history leaves the Carrier Dome with a stinging loss.

If Syracuse needed a team to face right now, it’s Colgate. The past two games, both losses, Syracuse has been muscled around on the boards. The Raiders have no true center and a 6-foot-8 freshman as its top rebounder, and he never even played the position before college. The Orange’s winning streak reaches 50 against Colgate and gives Mike Hopkins his first win as temporary head coach.
