Syracuse wins both games in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge
Syracuse (3-4) won both of its games in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Saturday, beating Ohio State (4-2), 1-0, in the first game and avenging Friday’s loss by beating Purdue (4-3), 11-3, via mercy rule, in the second game.
AnnaMarie Gatti got the start against Ohio State and allowed no runs. The Orange got the lead in the 4th inning after Hannah Dossett’s RBI single, which scored Sydney O’Hara from second base. It was all the cushion that Syracuse would need in the 1-0 victory.
The Orange bats came alive in the second game. SU scored six runs in the first three innings behind three home runs. Rachel Burkhardt hit a solo shot in the first inning, and Alyssa Dewes and Dossett each hit two-run homers in the second and third innings, respectively.
Purdue sliced the lead in half in the top of the 4th when Emily Kenny took Jocelyn Cater for a three-run home run. But Corinne Ozanne responded with a homer in the bottom half of the inning to open up a four-run lead.
The Orange put the game away in the 5th. Dossett’s second homer of the game built up a 9-3 lead, and an Andrea Bombace double and then a Dewes single gave the Orange the game-ending 8-run lead.
Syracuse resumes play tomorrow at 10 a.m. as it finishes off the ACC-Big Ten Challenge by playing Ohio State again.
