Devante McFarlane is the sixth player to leave Syracuse's football program since Dino Babers became head coach.

Fifth-year running back Devante McFarlane has decided to leave the Syracuse football program, SU Athletics confirmed on Tuesday. Syracuse.com first reported the news.

Entering the 2015 season, McFarlane was slotted as the starting running back but fell behind then-freshman Jordan Fredericks within the first few weeks. McFarlane rushed for 563 yards on 111 attempts and scored one touchdown in 34 games during his SU career. His rushing yards decreased each of his three seasons at Syracuse. McFarlane ranked sixth on the team with just 35 rushing attempts in 2015.

Syracuse returns Fredericks, a sophomore, senior George Morris and sophomore walk-on Jacob Hill. Sophomore Dontae Strickland has spent the beginning portion of spring practice with the running backs and Class of 2016 signee Jo-El Shaw is also expected to join the group.

McFarlane is the sixth player to leave the program since Dino Babers became the Orange’s new head coach and the second to do so voluntarily, joining wide receiver Ben Lewis. Defensive linemen Amir Ealey, Qaadir Sheppard, Kenny Carter, and offensive lineman Alex Hayes were dismissed for a violation of team rules.
