Former Syracuse defensive end Ron Thompson has been signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indianapolis Colts, according to multiple reports.
Thompson passed up his senior year of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft. He told reporters during the pre-Draft process that the firing of SU head coach Scott Shafer and the rest of the coaching staff factored into his decision to leave for the NFL.
As a junior with the Orange, Thompson led the team with seven sacks. He also recorded 35 tackles and 9.5 of them were for a loss. His four forced fumbles and five quarterback hits were also team highs. He was also named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s third team.
Following Thompson and others’ early departures from the team, though, Syracuse doesn’t return a single defensive end with collegiate starting experience.
The current defensive end was originally recruited out of high school as a tight end. He was ranked with four stars and as the 13th best tight end in the recruiting class, according to Scout.com. But after an injury-filled redshirt year in 2012, he switched to defensive line. As a sophomore, Thompson played defensive tackle to plug a hole on SU’s defense.
At the NFL Combine in February, Thompson was measured at 6 feet 3 inches, 253 pounds, a 32 and a quarter inch wingspan and 9 and three-eighth inch hands.
