Former Syracuse forward James Southerland has joined Boeheim’s Army as a ringer in the Super 16 of The Basketball Tournament in Philadelphia, the team announced hours prior to its game Thursday night.

Southerland joins the second-seeded Syracuse alumni team, Boeheim’s Army, for its Thursday night matchup with Pitt’s alumni team,  No. 3 seed The Untouchables, at Philadelphia University. A ringer is defined as a player substituted for another.

Over his four years at Syracuse, spanning from 2009 to 2013, Southerland averaged 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. During his senior season, he missed six games due to an academic issue. In the 2013 Big East tournament later that year, he set a tournament record when he hit six 3s without missing in a loss to Pittsburgh.

The 6-foot-8 forward went undrafted in 2013 before playing for the Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors in the 2013 NBA Summer League. He appeared in four NBA regular season games in 2013-14. He then played parts of two seasons overseas.

Last month, Southerland signed a contract with the Washington Wizards to play in this year’s NBA Summer League.
