Gabriela Knutson won SU's lone point against Columbia on Sunday.

Syracuse (1-1) split its opening weekend matches with a 4-3 win over Yale (0-1) on Saturday and a 6-1 loss to Colombia (1-1) on Sunday afternoon.

SU freshman Miranda Ramirez picked up a singles win against Yale’s Elizabeth Zordani. The doubles team of Ramirez and Gabriella Knutson lost its first match. Three out of the five singles matches took three sets to decide.

Against Colombia, only Knutson won a singles match and she and Ramirez came together to pick up their first doubles win. It wasn’t enough to win the doubles point, as Dina Hegab and Nicole Mitchell lost their game for SU. Colombia was awarded the point by default in the third match.

Three of Colombia’s four singles wins needed only two sets to complete, while Syracuse’s Knutson took three sets to win her match.

Senior Valeria Salazar was unavailable to play in either match for the Orange. She and her usual doubles partner Knutson are ranked No. 10 nationally and No. 1 in the region. Salazar also is ranked No. 38 Nationally and No. 1 in the region as a singles player.

Syracuse’s next match comes against Mississippi State on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for the first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
