Freshman Carolin Hoffmann played her second game for Syracuse on Sunday. She ended it with her first three career goals.
The hat trick from the freshman forward propelled No. 5 Syracuse (2-0) to a 3-0 shutout win over No. 25 Pacific (1-1) on Sunday afternoon.
Pacific had six first-half penalty corners but failed to convert, entering halftime trailing by one. Hoffmann, a native of Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany, scored her first goal with under a minute remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Hoffmann poured in two more goals, with about seven minutes of game action separating them. Caroline Cady, Elaine Carey and Emma Tufts all picked up their first assists of the season.
Syracuse freshman goalie Borg van der Velde picked up her second consecutive shutout win, saving all three shots directed her way.
The Orange will complete its California road trip with a game at UC-Davis (0-1) on Monday.
