Devon Clarke was left off the depth chart prior to Syracuse's season opener and has been ruled ineligible.

UPDATED: Aug. 29, 2017 at 7:01 p.m.

Syracuse football redshirt freshman safety Devon Clarke, who was suspended from the team in February after he was arrested and charged with burglary, is ineligible to play.  An SU Athletics spokesman confirmed the news first reported by Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey to The Daily Orange Tuesday evening.

“Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, we are not able to provide further details,” SU assistant director of athletic communications Mike Morrison said in an email to Syracuse.com.

Clarke did not immediately respond to a phone call and text from The Daily Orange.

Both Clarke and Jaquwan Nelson were arrested and charged in February for stealing two pairs of “Yeezy” boots, a laptop and a PlayStation 4, according to Sgt. Richard Helterline of the Syracuse Police Department. Both were later suspended from all team activities by head coach Dino Babers due to a violation of team rules. Clarke had been reinstated from suspension, while former defensive end Jaquwan Nelson is no longer a member of the program.

Clarke, 19, was charged with second-degree burglary and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Clarke, who missed 2016 preseason camp due to injury and redshirted the season, was ranked as the No. 20 safety in the state of Florida by Scout.com. He did not appear on the preseason depth chart nor did he appear on the depth chart released Monday for SU’s season opener on Friday against Central Connecticut State.
