Syracuse has been voted No. 2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Poll. Two Orange players, Roos Weers and Laura Hurff, were selected to the preseason All-ACC team.
The voting was conducted among the seven ACC head coaches. Syracuse, finishing with 27 points, ended up in a tie with Duke for the No. 2 spot. Coming in a few more points ahead SU was North Carolina (31).
Syracuse and Duke garnered two first-place votes apiece from the polling, while the Tar Heels received one. In 2016, Duke finished first in the conference standings at 5-1, with Syracuse a game back at 4-2.
Next in the poll came Louisville (22) and Virginia (21), who each received one first-place vote. Wake Forest (12) and Boston College (7) rounded out the bottom two.
Syracuse’s two All-ACC preseason selections were also members of the postseason All-ACC team following the 2016 season.
Hurff, a senior midfielder, scored seven goals last year and achieved second-team All-America status. Weers enters her junior year as the 16th leading goalscorer in Orange history, with 25. The back made first-team All-America last season.
Lacking from the preseason team was Syracuse back Lies Lagerweij, who joined Weers as a first team All-American last year. Lagerweij led the Orange with 13 goals in 2016.
Syracuse opens the season with three games in California, the first of which is against Cal on Aug. 25. SU’s home opener at J.S. Coyne Stadium is on Sept. 2 against Bucknell.
