Syracuse (0-0-1) tied Bemidji State (0-0-1), 0-0, in its season opener Friday night at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minnesota. Despite 102 combined shots in 65 total minutes, neither team could net their first goal of the year.

Abbey Miller was a stalwart in goal for the Orange, facing 47 total shots and saving all 30 that were on target. The senior’s shutout received aid from senior defender Dakota Derrer, who paced Syracuse with six blocked shots.

The Orange had three power plays in the game, one in each period of regulation. The first came just 1:44 into the contest, thanks to an interference penalty on the Beavers. The advantage was one of the best opportunities of the night for Syracuse, which got off six shots during the two minutes but couldn’t capitalize. The Beavers dominated the puck for the remainder of the first period and played even in the second. An attack by the Orange late in the third period almost won the game.

After squandering its third power play of the game earlier in the period, the Orange returned the favor and killed a Bemidji State power play. It was the last time either team would be on the power play. With 4:12 remaining in regulation, SU came alive. The Orange took seven shots in the last four minutes of the period, all on goal. In a flurry, Syracuse unleashed four shots to end the period, two of which went on goal, but to no avail.

Both sides combined to attempt six shots (five on goal) in overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net and the game ended with zeroes across the board.

Syracuse is back in action Saturday with a rematch against Bemidji State at 4:00 p.m., concluding the first weekend of the season.
