No. 5 North Carolina (8-2, 4-0 Atlantic Coast) blew out Syracuse (5-4-2, 0-2-1), 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Syracuse was outshot 26-8 and the Tar Heels put 18 shots on goal to the Orange’s four.

North Carolina scored its first goal in the 16th minute on just its fourth shot of the game. After that, the Tar Heels scored three goals in just under 20 minutes to end the first half ahead, 4-0.

Before UNC’s first goal, SU (two shots) had kept pace with North Carolina (three shots), but after the first goal, Syracuse didn’t record another shot for the rest of the first period until freshman Kate Hostage fired one wide in the 44th minute. Over that span, the Orange were outshot nine to one.

Syracuse took two corners to North Carolina’s eight and they only translated to one shot, as opposed to UNC’s five.

Courtney Brosnan made 11 saves in the game, a season high, but also allowed seven goals, a season-worst performance for her and the Orange defense. Hostage and Alex Lamontagne are the only Syracuse players to record more than one shot in the game, recording two each to lead the Orange.

The seven-goal blowout comes after Syracuse allowed only one goal total to its first two ACC opponents, Wake Forest and Clemson, which were both ranked when the Orange played them.

The seven goals are more than Syracuse has allowed in its previous nine games combined, going back all the way to its second game of the season, against then No. 21 Connecticut.

Following the lopsided loss, Syracuse travels to take on the Pittsburgh Thursday at 7 p.m.
