Syracuse (5-3-2, 0-3-1 Atlantic Coast) received eight votes, but dropped out of the United Soccer Coaches poll on Tuesday. Unranked for the first time this season, the Orange began the year at No. 8.
The exit comes four days after SU lost against Pittsburgh, 2-1. The Panthers took an early two-goal lead and a Kamal Miller header in the 88th minute cut the deficit in half. The loss was the Orange’s fourth in its last five games.
Seven other ACC teams are ranked in this week’s Top 25: No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 5 Clemson, No. 7 Louisville, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 11 Virginia and No. 19 Duke. SU’s next match against a ranked opponent is Oct. 21 against Clemson.
Syracuse hosts Akron (5-2-1), which received 54 votes, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Zips have won three games in a row, including a 4-1 drubbing of then-No. 1 Michigan State. Defender Nate Shultz was named the United Soccer Coaches division I national player of the week after scoring two goals against MSU.
