Syracuse (9-3, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) fell to No. 9 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Two weeks ago, SU was ranked No. 6 and last week ranked No. 7.
The two-spot slip comes after a split weekend. The Orange played at then-No. 12 Louisville on Friday, where the Cardinals prevailed in second overtime, 2-1. Louisville jumped one spot to No. 11 in Tuesday’s rankings. SU came back home and defeated then-No. 16 Princeton, 1-0, on Sunday.
There are four ACC teams ranked above Syracuse: No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Virginia, No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Boston College. The Orange traveled to BC on Sept. 8 and won 6-0. The Tar Heels defeated SU at J.S. Coyne Stadium in overtime, 3-2.
Connecticut remains the only undefeated team in the country, now 11-0. The Huskies received 46 of a possible 49 first place votes. Duke received two and Virginia received one.
The Orange travel to Durham, NC to play Duke on Saturday, Oct. 7. SU’s next match after that will be home against Virginia the following weekend, Oct. 14.
