Syracuse (11-6, 3-1 Atlantic Coast) defeated Wake Forest (10-6, 2-2) Sunday afternoon at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Orange took the first two sets, 25-18, 25-17, before splitting the final two, 18-25, 25-13.
Six different Syracuse players recorded four or more kills, including Ella Saada (13) and Santita Ebangwese (seven). Jalissa Trotter registered 28 assists, including her 1,000th career assist, and finished with a season-high four kills. Ebangwese (five blocks), Amber Witherspoon (five blocks), and Christina Oyawale (seven blocks) powered the Orange near the net.
With the score knotted at seven in the opening set, the Demon Deacons committed two attack errors and a service error. Three points later, back-to-back-to-back Ebangwese kills extended Syracuse’s lead to 14-9. SU never looked back, as Ebangwese finished the set with five kills and a .833 hitting percentage. Wake Forest failed to score more than two points in a row during the set, something SU accomplished three times.
In the second set, up 19-10, Wake Forest ripped seven points in a row, four of which were attack or service errors by SU. But three service aces by Saada propelled Syracuse to a set-ending 5-0 run. Saada ended the match with four aces, her highest mark of the season.
Syracuse’s attack errors and defense in the third set allowed the Demon Deacons to steer clear of a three-set sweep. Down 13-9, Wake Forest scored six points in a row, three of which were attack errors by the Orange. Though it evened the score at 15, Syracuse allowed another Wake Forest 6-0 run. The Demon Deacons wrapped up the set with a 25-18 win.
Syracuse battled back after dropping the third set, scoring 16 of the first 20 points. The Orange pieced together three runs, 5-0, 6-0, and 4-0, respectively, before finishing off the final set, 25-13. Trotter tallied eight assists and two kills, and Saada chipped in with six kills in the set.
The Orange returns home on Oct. 6 to host Clemson at 7 p.m.
