Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity placed on probation following conduct violations related to hazing

The Syracuse University chapter of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity has been put on “extended disciplinary probation” following an investigation into alleged violations of the university’s code of conduct, an SU spokesperson said Tuesday.
Cameron Pierro, DKE’s current president, confirmed in an email Wednesday the conduct violations were related to hazing. The fraternity was supposed to be suspended from campus, but the decision was appealed on Monday, he confirmed.
DKE’s risk management policy, posted on the fraternity’s national office website, states “no chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities.”
The organization’s national office did not return multiple requests for comment on this story.
According to the university’s Student Conduct System Handbook, disciplinary probation “constitutes a change in status between good standing and suspension or expulsion from the University.” Additional violations of the code of conduct may result in immediate suspension, indefinite suspension or expulsion from the university, according to the handbook.
Pierro said the disciplinary probation extends through Dec. 15, 2019. DKE is also on social probation through Dec. 15, 2018, he said.
Social probation is a status applied, “as a result of a breach of specific social regulations” and its effect “is to suspend a privilege related to the nature of the offense and/or restrict access to specific campus facilities or programs,” per the handbook.
“The physical and mental wellbeing of our students is the University’s top priority,” the SU spokesperson said in a statement. “We’ll work closely with DKE National Office and local leadership to ensure chapter members are following the code of conduct during the probationary period.”
DKE was suspended from SU in March 2000, after a former pledge accused the fraternity of abuses that included hazing. The fraternity was recognized again by SU months later, after separate investigations conducted by the university’s Office of Greek Life and DKE alumni, respectively.
The fraternity was suspended again in April 2002, after a fight near Marshall Street involving more than 100 people.
The national Delta Tau Delta fraternity suspended SU’s chapter in the fall of 2017 for multiple violations of its policies, including hazing incidents in spring 2017.
