After defeating two ranked opponents last week in singles play, No. 11 Gabriela Knutson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. This marks the second time Syracuse’s (9-2, 2-2 ACC) Knutson has won this award, the other being in February 2016.
Knutson split two tiebreaks against Virginia Tech’s then-No. 61 Natalie Novotna, but came out strong in the third set to win 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Following her victory on Friday, Knutson fought off two tiebreakers against North Carolina’s then-No. 8 Alle Sanford to win in two sets, 7-6, 7-6, on Sunday. Her singles victory gave SU its lone victory in a 6-1 loss to No. 1 UNC.
Knutson remains the only undefeated player for the Orange this season after posting nine-straight victories. Her recent success resulted in her ITA ranking advancing seven spots to No. 11.
Syracuse will return back to action on Mar. 13 against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Florida, where Knutson may face No. 6 Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov in first singles.
CORRECTION: In a previous version of this post, Alle Sanford was misnamed. The Daily Orange regrets this error.
