Six members of Syracuse’s (9-9, 1-6 Atlantic Coast) starting lineup were named to All-Northeast Region teams by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association on Friday afternoon. Two sophomores, Emily Hawryschuk and Kerry Defliese, comprised SU’s first-team selections. Riley Donahue, Taylor Gait, Nicole Levy and Asa Goldstock were awarded second-team honors.
Hawryschuk paces the Orange in points (61) and goals (53). The Victor, New York, native was a second-team selection a year ago, when she posted 48 points and fulfilled her childhood dream of dawning Syracuse Orange. This season, she’s upped her game with Levy as a part of SU’s dynamic scoring duo. The pairing has worked on getting on the same page, with teams often face-guarding one of them. Hawryschuk has often found herself the go-to player, scoring at least four goals in seven games.
Defliese, one of SU’s premier defenders, moved down from the midfield to sure up the Orange’s backline. She’s been a stalwart of Syracuse’s new “man-to-man” defense which has at times been inconsistent. Yet, Defliese has started every game and as contributed career-highs in ground balls (18), caused turnovers (15) and draw controls (41). The sophomore has contributed at the faceoff X either on the wing or as the draw person after the injury of Morgan Widner sent the team “scrambling.”
Donahue, a senior captain, entered the season as SU’s focal point and leads the team in assists (20) and ranks third in points (45). Gait, a redshirt-senior, totaled career-best in points (30) and assists. Levy has recorded 38 goals and made highlights with the trick shots that have become a natural part of her game.
Goldstock is tied for 34th in the country with 155 total saves. A year removed from a shaky freshman campaign, she’s settled in and been a steady force behind the Orange backline.
SU takes on Cornell in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Friday at 4 p.m.
