For the first time since 2007, No. 17 Syracuse (8-8, 1-5 Atlantic Coast) failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament field. The 18-team field was announced on Sunday night, and the Orange failed to grab one of the eight available at-large bids.

Syracuse began the season ranked No. 11 in the NFHCA Coaches’ Poll, and climbed as high as No. 9 on Oct. 9 after the Orange defeated Boston College in their lone ACC win.

At that point, the Orange were 8-4. They didn’t win another game, losing four consecutive games to then-No. 16 Wake Forest, then-No. 10 Louisville, then-No. 12 St. Joseph’s and No. 3 Duke. Syracuse led in three of those four games.

Entering the ACC tournament against Duke, SU’s three seniors, Jamie Martin, Roos Weers and Caroline Cady, knew they needed a win to have a chance. Syracuse lost 4-1, in what ended up its final game of the season.

Syracuse ranked No. 10 in RPI through Oct. 28, which was sixth of the eligible at-large teams. However, its coaches’ poll No. 17 ranking left them 12th on the list of at-large teams.

The end of the season marks the end of Weers’ decorated SU career. In four years, Weers started on the national champion team in 2015 and became the 15th ACC player to win All-ACC honors four times.
