Vaccinations on campus should be advertised more
Dear Editor,
Flu season is in full swing at Syracuse University yet again, but as I look around campus I am underwhelmed by the lack of promotion for vaccination clinics.
College campuses are a breeding ground for germs, making it extremely easy for illnesses like the flu to spread rapidly amongst students and faculty. Time and time again, vaccines have been scientifically proven as safe and effective methods to prevent disease. Not only this, but the more people who get vaccinated, the greater chance herd immunity will occur – providing a measure of protection for those that are not immune. While I understand that some may have moral, religious, or other personal reasons to decline vaccinations, many students neglect this important health practice simply because of lack of awareness of the services offered on campus. “Out of sight and out of mind” is a common saying, but it is not one that should be used when talking about getting your flu shot.
While the information regarding these clinics has been briefly mentioned in a few emails and sparsely posted on bulletin boards around campus, I believe we can and should be doing so much more. We need signs on the Quad detailing dates and times. We need text alerts sent to all students and faculty, social media advertisements and clinics that are accessible and available to everyone. We are a school with great resources, so let’s make them known and keep our campus healthy.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Claudia Cavanaugh
