Syracuse University stayed open on Thursday despite below-zero wind chills and closures from neighboring schools.

SU decided to remain open after consulting an independent meteorologist as well as National Weather Service data and determining the weather will improve, according to an email sent to the campus community.

SU’s Student Association posted an announcement to its Instagram account on Thursday morning telling students to stay home if they are worried about attending class because of health concerns.

“Put your health and safety as your number one priority, especially in today’s weather,” the statement read.

SUNY-ESF, located on SU’s campus, cancelled classes on Thursday due to expected weather conditions of a -10 degree wind chill.

The Syracuse City School District also closed Thursday because of the cold weather.

Evening classes were cancelled on Wednesday due to weather. SU last cancelled a full day of classes in 2018, which was only the third time in university history.
