Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety presented safety tips for students using ride-sharing apps in a campus-wide email on Monday.
DPS said in the email that the safety measures were sent out “in light of recent events involving ride sharing.” A senior at the University of South Carolina was killed on Friday after getting into a car that she believed was her Uber ride, KNOE News reported.
The email advised students to stay inside until they’re ready to get in the car, confirm driver details and share their trip status. Students should also help friends when they request ride-sharing and use common sense when using ride-sharing services, the email said.
In December 2017, Syracuse Police Department arrested and charged a 34-year-old man for allegedly harassing and imprisoning an SU student after he picked her up using a ride-sharing app on Ostrom Avenue.
