David Seaman, dean of libraries and university librarian, will act as interim dean of Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies while the search for a new dean extends into the summer.

Vice Chancellor and Provost Michele Wheatly announced Seaman’s appointment in an email to iSchool students Monday afternoon. Current dean Liz Liddy is set to retire at the end of May. The search for a new dean will be extended into the 2019-20 academic year, according to an SU News release.

Liddy announced in September that she would retire at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after more than 30 years at the iSchool. She was appointed as dean in 2008 and served as vice chancellor and provost between January 2015 and May 2016 before returning as dean.

During her tenure, Liddy helped increase undergraduate enrollment by 71% and graduate enrollment by 66%. She also raised more than $26 million for research.

Once appointed, Seaman will step down from his position as chair of the Dean Search Committee, a position he’s held since November, according to an SU News Release.

Seaman was hired as SU’s dean of libraries in June 2015. Before that, he spent almost a decade at Dartmouth College.
