Liberty is playing its first game in the FBS on Saturday.

Hugh Freeze, Liberty’s head football coach, is coaching Syracuse’s season-opening game in a hospital bed from the press box.

Freeze has missed the past few weeks of practice after undergoing surgery for a herniated disk, and doctors discovered a serious staph infection.

Freeze will address his team via video conference at halftime and after the game, Syracuse.com reported. Freeze did the same before the game.

Freeze was named the head coach of Liberty in December of 2018 after five seasons at Ole Miss. Freeze resigned from Mississippi after officials discovered he had used a university-issued cell phone to call escort services.

In the first quarter, the teams exchanged three-and-outs before Sean Riley muffed a punt. Liberty then missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. Freeze also saw his team fumble inside the five-yard line.
